With the STC range, Starrag once again lives up to it’s excellent reputation in the aircraft industry as a heavy cutting, 5 axis machining specialist. For decades, the most up to date technologies have been applied for the milling of the most complex flow parts and components in both single- and multi-spindled machines.
Components that are especially load bearing structures, or parts that are imperative to safety that are made from titanium, can be produced both economically and in unrivaled quality with the STC range of 5-axis machining centers.

The swiveling spindle head has been developed as a result of our bountiful years of milling experience. Roughing and finishing on the same machine – these are attributes that have spread through the entire aircraft industry. They are made possible thanks to the machines’ exceptional stability, which consistently ensures high machining accuracies & repeatability, and excellent surface qualities.
The machining spindle offers high torque at low RPM and consists of a wear resistant, practically backlash free axis drive. To ensure the process stability, the greatest attention has been given to an optimized and short flow of forces. The STC range has been engineered using the most up-to-date mechatronic development methods available to date. The FEM-supported design, coupled with a main machine framework steel construction, and executed in a NC-welded assembly, are all attributes of our extensive precision tool manufacturing abilities.

Starrag offers a wide variety of options for the STC machining center range, and, depending on your requirements, our machines can be integrated in to a flexible manufacturing pallet pool or connected on to a FMS with multi-pallet storage system, run by an integrated cell computer; all this from Starrag as your single source contractor.

Your benefit

  • The outstanding stiffness and stability of Starrag machining centers provides continuous quality, high lifelong accuracy, and dependable process reliability.

  • The STC range is configured for high chip removal rates and superb workpiece accuracy, and offers ideal conditions for the machining of large, complex components.

  • Thanks to the complete machining capability on 5 sides, manufacturing processes are optimized because the number of set-ups is condensed; fixture complexity is eased and the component through-put logistics and costs reduced i.e. less capital is tied up.

  • We offer a wide choice of additional options and application-related equipment on our machines that allows individually-adapted solutions for all manufacturing tasks to be selected.

  • High milling feed rates that are coupled with a machine which is perfectly calibrated to cope with a specific application provides exceptional efficiency.

  • A stable, low-vibration milling process provides the foundation for extended tool life and thus for successful and economical production.

Applications
  • The powerful, swiveling A-axis makes the STC machining center range perfectly suited for the machining of titanium, inconel, aluminum, nimonic, high tensile alloy steels and nickel-based alloys, thermon, gamma titanium or ‘tripple 5’ titanium.

  • Their real strengths come into effect when challenging components demand an extended tool life, special milling strategies and testing accuracy requirements.

  • Large, complex assembly units and load bearing aircraft structural parts that require a proportion of roughing work, coupled with thin walls and highly accurate drilled holes.

  • Aero engine components with high nickel content, which require the best possible vibration free machining, and avoidance of unnecessary tooling costs.

  • Simultaneous, 5-axis machining of multi-blade components (blisks, impellers), aircraft structural parts and complex parts (housings, casings) with precise boring operations; or the machining of component surfaces at almost any angle.

  • The economical production of either light alloys or titanium parts, in one set-up, on the same machine.

  • Ready to be integrated into a flexible manufacturing system of any grade or complexity.

Machine concept
  • The excellent static and dynamic characteristics of the STC series accord the machine its outstanding process stability.

  • The welded steel construction with embedded active and passive dampening elements in the machine base ensures not only incredible stability but also outstanding dampening of the components.

  • Our variety of high performance spindles for various RPM ranges, torques and power permit the use of state-of-the-art tooling that can increase the overall efficiency of the STC-system.

  • High resonance frequency of the machine base avoids critical resonances and therefore keeps cutting in an uncritical range.

  • Well dimensioned drive train for high feed rates and high power feeds.

  • The thermo-symmetric layout of the machine base, combined with effective process cooling, grants the highest process safety.

  • Good acceleration and rapid feeds for this machine size (40 metric tons)

  • High table loads allow the machining of exceptionally bulky parts with complex jigs.
